Does your Lifejacket meet the Australian Standard?

Does your Lifejacket meet the Australian Standard?

From 1 January 2025, new safety regulations in South Australia will take effect, prohibiting the use of lifejackets certified under the older Australian Standards AS1512, AS1499, or AS2260.

Boaters must replace these outdated models with lifejackets meeting the current Australian Standard AS4758 to remain compliant and ensure safety on the water.

These older lifejackets may be over 20 years old and are no longer permitted for sale. To avoid fines and stay safe, make sure everyone on board is equipped with a compliant lifejacket. Non-compliance could result in a maximum penalty of $1,250.

Key Lifejacket Safety Tips:

  • Regular Inspections: Check for wear and tear frequently to ensure all lifejackets remain in good working condition.
  • Inflatable Lifejackets: Service these models according to the manufacturer’s guidelines, usually once a year.
  • Use Only Approved Lifejackets: Lifejackets designed for swimming or pool use do not meet boating safety standards and are unsuitable for motorised vessels or unpowered craft like canoes and kayaks.

Be prepared for the changes ahead and protect yourself, your passengers, and others on the water. Replace old lifejackets now, and ensure your gear meets the latest safety standards!
